THE senators who want to short-circuit the constitutionally mandated impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte fall into two categories.
In the first category are the three Duterte die-hards: Robin Padilla, who has said that even if he were burned, he would still smell like former president Rodrigo Duterte; Bong Go, who said in June that “you can’t eat impeachment”; and Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa.Those in the second category are the cowed and transactional types who essentially see Sara as the next president and are now prematurely currying favors with her.
They will also make sure that the cowardice and fecklessness of the senators who would rather protect the Duterte princeling in lieu of fulfilling the constitutional mandate of trying the impeachment case will be long remembered, and get their black marks from historians.No, Filipinos will not go gently into that good night after a torpedoed impeachment process.
