The Country Liberal Party will oppose the Indigenous Voice to Parliament after several branches put forward motions to oppose the proposed parliamentary body.
Sky News Australia this week revealed at least three branches of the CLP had put forward motions to oppose the Voice at this weekend’s central council meeting.
Party members voted to support those motions at the meeting held at Lake Bennett, outside Darwin, on Saturday. “The CLP has sent a clear message that it will fight for an Australia in which all Australians are equal and these motions reflect that,” she said. The Country Liberal Party will move to formally oppose the Voice to Parliament. “The Voice is divisive, it is a dangerous threat to our democracy and it is unfair. I am grateful to the members of the CLP who voted to oppose it.” Northern Territory Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro has previously offered qualified support for the Voice but called for more detail about how it would help Aboriginal people in remote parts of the NT.
The CLP’s parliamentary wing could still support the Voice even though the party has voted to oppose it.
