Striking NSGEU school support workers and their supporters rally outside Province House on Thursday morning. The workers from the Annapolis Valley and the South Shore are seeking a contract that offers them wage parity with other regional centres of education. - Eric WynneCornelia Schneider, PhD, is associate professor, director of teacher education, Mount Saint Vincent University

This situation demonstrates, from an inclusive education perspective and from a disability rights perspective, the flaws built into the education system. While the inclusive education policy has been in place in this province since 2020, children with disabilities continue to be an afterthought in the planning of the education of all children. The policy is very clear that the education of all learners is to happen in the mainstream classroom.

From an inclusive education perspective, there is a lack of flexibility by the province when it comes to implementing the right to education and services. Hence, students with disabilities are now asked to stay at home while the strike is going on. It is well understood that, while the student support workers are on strike, certain services can temporarily not be delivered.

Children with disabilities are among those who struggle the most in their learning progression, so to always have them be the one missing out creates truly inequitable situations and it violates their children’s rights and disability rights.
