A glider took off from the Debert Airport on Oct. 28 with the assistance of a Ford F-150 that had been charged with solar energy. - ContributedDEBERT, N.S. — The first carbon-free flight in Nova Scotia recently took off from Debert thanks to the help of an electric truck.
Jeremie Bernardin came up with the idea a year-and-a-half ago with the hope of garnering excitement in the electric vehicle industry. He and David Giles are the founders of EV Canada, which was sold to Steele Auto Group a year ago. In the cockpit with the flying visitors was Rob Francis, a pilot from Truro involved in the gliding community who has been passionate about aviation since he was a teenager. He is an Air Cadet gliding instructor and works out of Debert. He said that there are three methods to launch a glider – a car, winch or another aircraft. Gliders themselves do not use carbon, but the launch normally does.
Not only did they highlight the powerful capabilities of electric vehicles, it was a nod to change in the aviation industry. Bernardin described it as a “fast, transforming space,” citing Air Canada’s purchase of short-haul electric planes and planes currently going from Vancouver to Victoria.
