Urban Ink and Raven Theatre present a new musical from Corey Payette.
“I really wanted to look at uplifting some of these voices in a way that was joyous and wasn’t tied to their trauma,” says Payette. “While the characters have experienced hardship, the show is actually about how they are working their way through those issues to find joy, to find love, and to find family and home. It’s also an exploration of my own queerness and two-spirit identity.”
It will also be really exciting for people to see all of these beautiful drag queens prancing around the stage and dancing up a storm.” “We workshopped with a bunch of musicians, singers and actors for a week in Summer of 2021 and came up with interesting skeletons of the songs,” said Bayntun. “About a year later, Corey came back to me with a whole new idea of taking what we’d done and giving it an entirely modern approach. He gave me a Spotify playlist with a bunch of different influences on it and permission to sit in my studio, dial up some synths, turn on some drum machines, and go to town.
“Pairing the emotions and themes I work with in a form where, when a character can’t speak anymore they start to sing, is perfect,” he said. “It has such as strong impact on how the audience receives the story, and contributes to bringing a personal understanding to the different issues facing Indigenous people that you don’t get in a news report. It’s an interdisciplinary practice that is such a natural extension for me that I can’t imagine working any other way.
