James Bauder, one of the leaders of last winter\u0027s convoy protest, has lost his bid to have his criminal trial moved out of the city.

In a ruling this week, Superior Court Justice Charles Hackland doubted many people in Ottawa knew Bauder’s name and, in any event, there is no guarantee that jurors share an accused’s political views.Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

“he character and personality types in Ottawa are government workers and the convoy was a protest against government overreach,” he said, adding, “these government employees are not my peers.”“I find that Mr. Bauder’s concerns about the attitudes of persons employed by the federal government, is baseless in fact and boils down to his concern that most Ottawa residents do not share his political views,” Hackland wrote in his decision.

What the judge did have concerns about was something that Bauder failed to mention in his arguments: That many potential jurors were “were injured or suffered physically, psychologically, or economically by the Freedom Convoy.”Article content
