The construction of protected bicycle lanes along EDSA will begin on Saturday, officials confirm.

The construction of protected bicycle lanes along EDSA will begin on Saturday, officials confirmed.

Transport Secretary Arthur Tugade and Metro Manila Development Authority officials, led by chairman Danny Lim, agreed to establish the bike lanes during a meeting on Thursday. The officials said that they fast-tracked the establishment of the protected bike lanes as more people shift to bicycles as mode of transportation during the coronavirus crisis.

Furthermore, it was discussed that the bike lanes will be located on roads, rather than on sidewalks. The project will be done in two phases- interim and long term.Lim added that the bike lanes will provide 1.5 meters of space for bikers. A bikers’ group was earlier threatened to be fined by the MMDA for obstruction after they set up a temporary bike lane in Commonwealth, Quezon City.MMDA Spokesperson Celina Pialago then warned the group not to place the markers again without coordinating with the agency first.
