CONSERVATIVE and religious leaders and their allies in Congress are mobilizing against the proposed Prevention of Adolescent Pregnancy Act in the Senate, more than a year after a similar bill was passed in the House of Representatives.Both bills seek to address the growing problem of teenage pregnancies and all the attendant health risks and financial burdens they entail. To stand in the way of such legislation, using fear and deception, is a disservice to the nation.

'When the mother is not healthy, the child she carries will also be unhealthy,' he warned. 'Adolescent mothers face higher risks of eclampsia, puerperal endometritis and systemic infections than women aged 20 to 24 years, and babies of adolescent mothers face higher risks of low birth weight, preterm birth and severe neonatal conditions.
