Breaking | After days of deadlock and 15 rounds of voting, Republican Kevin McCarthy has finally won enough support to become US House Speaker
: Kevin McCarthy has finally won his quest to become the new Speaker of the US House of Representatives after winning over enough hard-line Republicans to break the deadlock that has paralysed the Congress for days.
After 11 humiliating losses over the past four days, McCarthy built significant momentum in the 12th and 13th ballots, flipping 15 Republican detractors and shifting the momentum in what has been one of the most protracted battles for the speakership in US history. “The American people expect their leaders to govern in a way that puts their [the people’s] needs above all else, and that is what we need to do now,” Biden said. The shift came after McCarthy agreed to many of his detractors’ demands, including to a House rule that will allow a single member to call a vote to oust him from office. The so-called “motion to vacate” rule usually requires a call by five people.
