In a dramatic 12th round of voting, McCarthy was able to gain more support for the top job.
: Kevin McCarthy has finally won his quest to become the new Speaker of the US House of Representatives after winning over enough hard-line Republicans to break the deadlock that has paralysed the Congress for days.
After 11 humiliating losses over the past three days, McCarthy built significant momentum in the 12th and 13th ballots, flipping 15 Republican detractors and shifting the momentum in what has been one of the most protracted battles for the speakership in US history. In the 15th round of voting, Gaetz and fellow members of the so-called “Never Kevin” faction, such as Lauren Boebert and Andy Biggs, ended up voting “present” rather than giving their vote to an alternative nominee for Speaker as they had previously. This allowed McCarthy to get enough votes from his own supporters to finally get over the line.Kevin McCarthy, right, in an argument with Matt Gaetz during a motion to adjourn after the 14th round .
“You only earn the position of Speaker of the House if you can get the votes,” Gaetz said in the chamber. Another concession would give members of the Freedom Caucus more seats on the powerful House Rules Committee, allowing them to assert greater influence over amendments that can be considered – or blocked – in the chamber.
