Concerns raised over drastic UN restructuring

THE United Nations is preparing to launch a sweeping internal restructuring plan, dubbed 'UN80,' in acknowledgment of the world body's 80th anniversary this year. There is not, however, anything at all celebratory about the new initiative, which has come under heavy criticism for its lack of transparency, and the UN Secretariat's apparent reluctance to consult with its workforce, represented by two influential staff unions, one in New York and one in Geneva.

At the same time, the UN has also been an infamously bloated and inefficient organization. It has a hard time convincing member countries to pay their dues in full and on time because of this, and in fact, even though the dues are an unconditional obligation, the reason they are often delayed is because influential countries have tried to use them as leverage to force reforms.
