Concerned residents in the Annapolis Valley and across mainland Nova Scotia are mobilizing to prevent the aerial spraying of herbicide on forestry ...

A group of concerned residents from the Burlington, Kings County, area and other North Mountain communities held a rally on McNally Road in September 2022 to protest the scheduled spraying of glyphosate on a nearby recovering clearcut. A group of neighbouring woodlot owners also occupied the proposed spray site with an encampment.

The subject property is owned by 4413746 Nova Scotia Limited, a company with the same address as Harry Freeman and Son Ltd., a Greenfield, Queens County, lumber company. A company representative couldn’t be reached for comment prior to deadline for this article. “With so many unknowns about the long-term effects of glyphosate on a forest ecosystem, it seems reasonable to accept this request to be a good neighbour in our community,” MacInnes Adams said in an Aug. 22 email.

She said she echoes the concerns of her neighbours. When glyphosate is sprayed on a forest, it affects biodiversity, killing vegetation that animals rely on for food, and impacts freshwater ecosystems and aquatic life. She said the practice of spraying glyphosate results in forests becoming more prone to fires, and this is as true for Nova Scotia as it is for British Columbia.

She said the two proposed sites in Paradise are side-by-side and were approved for spraying in 2020, while the Kings site was approved in 2020 and again in 2022. No spraying occurred in 2020 or 2022. When it comes to the spraying of pesticide or herbicide on forested land, Heath Canada determines whether a product is safe for use. Nova Scotia only approves the use of chemicals that have been approved by the federal agency.
