For once, the 18th-century French fortress is not the busiest place in Louisbourg. | SaltWire

There was plenty of comfort, including hot food and beverages, inside the Louisbourg Volunteer Fire Department's Joseph Trimm Community Centre on Tuesday. The hall is being used as an emergency comfort centre. Above, volunteers Mary Marsdon, left, and Gail Bond prepare to hand out some hot soup, while Jeannie Pearl and Sharon Carter work in the background. - David JalaLOUISBOURG, N.S. — For once, the 18th-century French fortress is not the busiest place in Louisbourg.

Among those taking advantage of the emergency venue were Ivory Neal and Mandy Helmes, both former Ontario residents who recently moved their families to Cape Breton. They look relaxed. No power? No problem. “Then a neighbour came by and fixed the roof. He even had the same shingles we had. So, we’re fine. It’s been great but kind of weird. Everything’s on hold. Time seems to have stood still.”

“People have been dropping off food and supplies. I’ve been talking with people who have gone into Sydney to pick up gas and supplies. They’ve all helped us out. We’ve been serving soup and sandwiches and we’ve even been serving a meal at supper time. “This is the worst storm I can remember here so it will take a while to clean up,” said lifetime Louisbourg resident Bob Burke.
