WITH the start of the 45-day local campaigning on Friday, the Commission on Elections has renewed its warning on candidates for reelection against the use of government resources for political purposes during the duration of the campaign period. Chairman George Erwin Garcia on Wednesday also sternly warned barangay officials, saying that they are covered by the prohibition on the use of government resources for campaign purposes even if they are not candidates.

'Never use the resources and facilities of the barangay for campaign and political purposes. There is no problem if you support a candidate or a political party but don't use public funds or resources. Abuse of state resources is punishable under Section 261 of the Omnibus Election Code,' the poll body chief pointed out.
