The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has paused ballot printing following temporary restraining orders issued by the Supreme Court. Vice President Sara Duterte ponders a presidential run in 2028, while Apollo Quiboloy's TV interview request is denied by a Pasig court. Additionally, the PNP refutes claims of a conspiracy to cover up drug raids. The automotive industry reports record-high sales, and Abraham 'Bambol' Tolentino is recognized as the PSA Executive of the Year for his leadership during the Paris Games.
The Commission on Elections ( Comelec ) announced on Tuesday the suspension of ballot printing following temporary restraining orders issued by the Supreme Court to prevent the disqualification of five candidates in the May 12, 2025 midterm elections. This decision also necessitates modifications to the candidates' database, election management system (EMS), automated counting machines (ACM), and the consolidation and canvassing system (CCS).
These systems have already undergone a trusted build process to ensure the integrity, security, and accuracy of the automated election system. This involves compiling the final, verified, and approved source code into 'executable machine-readable code' for deployment in the election systems.\Meanwhile, Vice President Sara Duterte revealed that she is 'seriously considering' a potential presidential run in 2028. This comes amidst declining trust and performance ratings, falling below the majority level for the first time since assuming the vice presidency. The announcement also follows the filing of three impeachment complaints against her, alleging the misuse of public funds, a charge she vehemently denies. In a video posted on SMNI News, owned by Duterte ally Apollo Quiboloy who faces human trafficking charges, a supporter inquired about her presidential aspirations for 2028. \In a separate development, a Pasig court rejected the motion by Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) founder Apollo Quiboloy to be permitted to participate in a live television interview regarding his decision to run for senator. The Pasig Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 159 cited potential risks associated with Quiboloy's public statements during the interview, as they could influence public perception of the ongoing legal proceedings. \Additionally, the Philippine National Police (PNP) refuted allegations of a 'grand conspiracy' within its ranks to conceal questionable drug raids. The PNP reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct, responding to claims made by the Department of the Interior and Local Government regarding an investigation into a suspected conspiracy to cover up suspicious raids, such as the one in October 2022 worth 6.7 billion pesos. \On a brighter note, the automotive industry experienced record-high car sales last year, driven by strong demand during the holiday season. Despite this success, the industry fell short of its 2024 target. According to reports from the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. (Campi) and the Truck Manufacturers Association, a total of 467,252 units were sold, marking an 8.7 percent increase from the previous peak of 429,807 in 2023. While surpassing previous sales figures, the industry fell short of Campi's initial target of 468,300 and its ambitious goal of reaching 500,000 by the end of 2024. \Finally, in the realm of sports, Abraham 'Bambol' Tolentino has been selected as the Executive of the Year by the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) for his exceptional leadership in overseeing the Philippines' participation and performance at the Paris Games. Tolentino, the current mayor of Tagaytay City, guided Team Philippines to its most successful Olympic outing in its history, with the country's first-ever double gold medal secured by Carlos Yulo in gymnastics. The recognition will be bestowed upon him at the SMC-PSA Annual Awards Night on January 27th at the Manila Hotel
