THE Commission on Elections launched on Monday, April 18, vote-counting machine demonstration in malls as part of transparency and effort to educate the public on the voting process for the upcoming national and local elections.
Comelec chairman Saidamen Pangarungan said this intervention aims to make the public more familiar in using VCMs, the tool that will be used for the recording and transmittal of votes on May 9. “With this project, we aim to dispel apprehension and fear of some voters regarding the use and security of the vote-counting machines. These are state-of-the-art equipment that has been used by other countries. They are engineered to be secure and tamper-proof. The programming and codes for the machines are also safe and secure,” he said during the launching and the signing of memorandum of agreement between Comelec and SM Supermalls.
Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said 800 mock ballots with random names of unknown individuals will be used per day in each station. He said the VCMs, which will be deployed for the demonstration, are only standby units during the election day itself.SunStar website welcomes friendly debate, but comments posted on this site do not necessarily reflect the views of the SunStar management and its affiliates.
