That a hockey team from New Glasgow once competed for the Stanley Cup, there is no doubt. But just what that team was named has been the subject of much debate. | SaltWire

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOSBut just what that team was named has been the subject of much debate.

That year the Stanley Cup was up for grabs on four different occasions- once in February, twice in March and again in December. A story included in a local newspaper 100 years after the challenge, called the team the New Glasgow Colts. Other local authors implied it was the Black Foxes of New Glasgow that played for the cup.

“December 27, 1906 - The Wanderers thumped the New Glasgow Cubs 10-3 in the first of a two-game, total goal series, which was completed two nights later when the Wanderers dumped the Cubs 7-2.” And, lastly, a book by Andrew Podnicks of Toronto in 2004 called “Lord Stanley’s Cup” once again says it was the New Glasgow Cubs that played for the cup in 1906.

One chapter highlights the 1921 excursion of three ocean hikers from Pictou who set out to sail and row their 16-foot sloop “Pictou” from Pictou to Panama, a distance of about 5,000 miles.
