Bacolod City tourism officials claim that partnerships between private entities and the local government, exemplified by the rum festival, have doubled the city's growth.

Bacolod City tourism officials claim that partnerships between private entities and the local government, exemplified by the rum festival, have doubled the city’s growth.

Bacolod, known as the “City of Smiles” and located in Western Visayas, is a leading producer of sugarcane, contributing 1.34 million metric tons—approximately 47.2 percent of the total production—from April to June 2023, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority . Specifically, Negros Occidental, referred to as the “Sugar Bowl of the Philippines,” supplies most of the country’s sugarcane, with about 208,000 hectares dedicated to planting and harvesting for raw sugar production.

Lucio Tan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Tanduay Distillers, Inc., stated that the festival was created to ensure that Bacolod remains the heart and home of Tanduay. He emphasized that wherever the rum is enjoyed, the City of Smiles will always be part of its story. “It’s a driver but at the same time we want it to become one of the strong foundations of the economy of the city,” she said.
