The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) warns the public about fraudulent offers of expedited SIM card registration services.
The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center ( CICC ) issued a warning on Wednesday against fraudulent offers of expedited SIM card registration. CICC executive director Alexander Ramos emphasized that there are no shortcuts to complying with Republic Act No. 11934, the SIM Registration Act. This warning comes amid the surge of dubious social media accounts offering SIM card registration services for various networks at a minimal fee.
One such account, claiming to represent DITO Telecommunity, attempted to lure customers with this service. However, DITO Telecommunity Corp. disavowed the account, stating that it had not authorized any such practice. RA 11934, enacted in 2022, aims to promote responsible SIM card usage and provide law enforcement with tools to combat crimes involving SIM cards. Ramos reminded the public that SIM card registration requires individuals to personally register with their respective networks, presenting a government-issued identification card and a selfie. He stressed that the process is straightforward and there is no need to engage third-party services. Ramos cautioned against falling for promises of expedited registration, as third parties may misuse the provided information. As of July 30, 2023, over 113 million SIM cards have been registered out of the approximately 168 million in circulation. Those with questions or issues regarding SIM registration can contact the Inter Agency Response Center hotline 1326, available 24/7
