Nine Filipinos including 2023 World Cup of Pool champions Johann Chua and James Aranas hurdled their respective opponents to advance to the knockout stage of the 2024 World Pool Championship in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, June 5.

Aranas also took the same route, bouncing back from a 9-3 defeat at the hands of Lithuania’s Pijus Labutis by outplaying Niels Feijen of the Netherlands, 9-7. Anton Raga and Jeffrey Ignacio clipped Australia’s James Georgiadis and Jan Van Kierop of the Netherlands, respectively, with similar 9-4 scores; Lee Vann Corteza crushed Greece’s Alexander Kazakis, 9-5; Roland Garcia edged Bahrain’s Hussain Maroom, 9-7; and Bernie Regalario bested United States’ Tyler Styer, 9-7, to also boost their title chances.
The first round of the knockout stage will be played in a race-to-11 format with Aranas fighting compatriot Corteza, and Chua facing Chinese Taipei’s Ko Pong Han.
