The government should be wary about immediately reopening the coronavirus-stricken economy and must put the lives and health of people above everything else, according to acting Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Kendrick Chua. Chua has cautioned that restarting businesses without adequate health safeguards might increase the risk of coronavirus transmission in the community.
The government should be wary about immediately reopening the coronavirus-stricken economy and must put the lives and health of people above everything else, according to acting Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Kendrick Chua.
Chua, acting head of the National Economic and Development Authority , explained that any decision to relax quarantine restrictions and open up more businesses must depend on the decrease of coronavirus cases as well as the capacity of the country healthcare system. He noted that the country’s testing capacity must also be considered in the decision to jumpstart the local economy.
Chua made the remarks as the government studies whether to lift or extend anew the enhanced community quarantine in Metro Manila and several high-risk areas beyond May 15. Several other areas with moderate and low risk of coronavirus infection are under the more relaxed general community quarantine. Chua remained upbeat that the coronavirus crisis is just a “temporary setback” and the economy can recover strongly due the country’s solid macroeconomic and fiscal management.
