The fire started around 9:00 PM on Pilapil Street, disrupting the festive atmosphere. Rogelio Minguez, a senior citizen, narrowly escaped suffocation inside his burning home. He recounted the terrifying experience, saying he woke up to smoke and had to jump to safety with his neighbors. Many residents lost their belongings in the blaze.
While the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) managed to contain the fire to a first alarm, it left 30 families homeless. The quick response from the community, who were gathered for a Christmas gathering, helped in containing the fire. Residents are temporarily staying at the barangay's covered court. The BFP is investigating the cause of the fire. In light of this incident, they are urging the public to avoid using fireworks during New Year's celebrations and to focus on preparing meals instead.
