The former Australia Post CEO should find alternative means to soothe her wounded pride.
Even after her hare-brained, self-serving scheming has been debunked, and long since her ongoing obsession with Australia Post became creepy,Holgate is now the CEO of Australia Post’s parcel competitor Team Global Express, owned by private equity barbarians Allegro Funds. In May, she commissioned thendodgy economic research that purported to show forcing Australia Post to deliver her parcels in regional Australia for 14¢ a pop would generate economic benefits to absolutely everyone.
To make out her argument that Australia Post should have to deliver her parcels to their customers’ front doors, Holgate relies on another enterprising manipulation of the facts – namely, the suggestion that Australia Post is over blowing the losses in its letters business.“While the slow erosion of letter volumes does continue it is not the primary driver of Australia Post’s losses,” the invitation to Holgate’s briefing claimed.
and found that Australia Post was headed for losses of $426 million by 2021, driven by the “high-risk” letters business. Among the draft solutions proposed in this document was the sacking of 3000 posties to save $360 million, and the closure of several mail processing centres.What actually came to pass between 2020 and 2023 was a total 17 per cent decline in letter volumes against an ever-increasing number of delivery points. Even still, it is a bit rich for Holgate to be calling this a “slow erosion”.
