It should concern Ford’s government that so many people are so quick to believe the worst of their intentions.
Social media went bananas Thursday evening over news that the Ontario government, in conjunction with the Ontario Medical Association, will be reviewing the cost, frequency and administration of several medical procedures with an eye to best practices and cost savings. The procedures include colonoscopies, which is what set everyone off.
The issue, according to the CityNews report, is anesthesiologist-assisted colonoscopies where the patient is put fully under. These more than doubled in prevalence in Ontario between 2005 and 2012, according to a 2015 study in the Canadian Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, while documents obtained by CityNews suggest it might have been a “five-fold over the past decade.
No one argues deep sedation, usually with the drug Propofol, is necessary. There is some evidence it may negatively impact the quality of the colonoscopy and “limit the ability of the operator to use best technique,” the Memorial docs note. On the other hand, they concede, it is “highly desired by apprehensive patients.” You don’t want to dissuade people from getting a potentially life-saving procedure. But the question needn’t be yes or no to Propofol.
