Shazam!, DC's latest, is what happens when Superman meets Big via nparts
And you thought Aquaman had a funny side. The latest origin story in the DC cinematic universe – still playing catch-up with Marvel in both quantity and quality – is Superman meets Big, as a teenaged boy is granted the combined powers of seven ancient deities. Shouting their silly-sounding acronym turns him into a 30-something version of himself, complete with glowing chest-plate and balloon-animal muscles.
Anyway, Billy is a foster kid with a habit of running away from homes. He gets a last-chance placement with the Vasquezes , whose sitcom-worthy blended family includes comic-book nerd Freddy Freeman, played by Jack Dylan Grazer. It’s a lucky break for Billy, who isn’t sure of the limits to his newfound powers or what to do with them. For much of the movie he poses for pictures, cheerfully accepting donations; it’s as if Times Square Spider-Man was actually Spider-Man.
Shazam! was directed by David F. Sandberg, whose other two features are the horror movies Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation. This might explain some of the dark twists taken by this new film, which is mostly aimed at kids, but features a few frightening scenes with monsters.
