ILOILO CITY — Law enforcement agencies confiscated over P5.5 billion worth of smuggled cigarettes from a warehouse owned by a Chinese citizen in this city on Wednesday.
Armed with a search warrant, the 4th Special Operation Unit of the Regional Maritime Unit 6 confiscated 83 boxes of undocumented cigarettes from the suspect identified as James Chiu Chen.The smuggled items, that include brands like Mighty, Camel, Marvel, Winston, and Cannon Menthol, are believed to have originated from Malaysia.The 59-year-old Chinese was also arrested in his warehouse in Gregorio Subdivision, Barangay Lopez Jaena Sur in the La Paz district.
In an interview, Chen said his supply was imported into the country by ship and delivered by Muslims from Manila to Iloilo City.RMU-6 is now investigating the Muslim suspect who allegedly delivered the smuggled cigarettes to Chen.Col. Ervin Glenn Provido, RMU-6 chief, said that the smuggled items might have been brought in through the seaport, loaded into a vehicle, and delivered to Chen's residence.
