A Chinese Coast Guard vessel used a long-range acoustic device (LRAD) to harass a Philippine Coast Guard vessel patrolling near Zambales. The incident highlights the ongoing tension in the South China Sea.

A Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) vessel was caught on camera using a long-range acoustic device ( LRAD ) to harass a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel patrolling near Zambales on January 25, 2025. The PCG released a video showing the incident, highlighting the aggressive tactics employed by the Chinese vessel.

According to Commodore Jay Tarriela, PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea (WPS), the BRP Cabra remained steadfast in its mission to prevent Chinese Coast Guard vessels from approaching the Zambales coastline. Tarriela stated that the CCG-3103, which replaced CCG-3304 earlier that day, used the LRAD to attempt to deter the Philippine vessel from getting closer. The LRAD is capable of emitting high-decibel sounds that can cause pain and hearing damage. He noted that the Chinese Coast Guard had been pushed back to a position between 90 and 95 nautical miles from the shore.Despite the harassment and the intimidating presence of a larger Chinese vessel referred to as the 'Chinese monster ship,' the BRP Cabra continued its patrol. Tarriela explained that the BRP Cabra conducted hourly radio challenges to assert that the Chinese presence violated Philippine Maritime Zones Act, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and the 2016 Arbitral Award. The PCG emphasized its commitment to safeguarding the nation's maritime jurisdiction while striving to avoid provocation and escalation. This incident underscores the ongoing tension between the Philippines and China in the South China Sea. Beijing's persistent aggression stems from its claim of sovereignty over nearly the entire South China Sea, including significant parts of the West Philippine Sea, despite the 2016 arbitral ruling that invalidated its claims and upheld Manila's rights
