After nearly three decades of serving all-day dim sum in Toronto’s downtown Chinatown, Rol San served its last baskets of har gow and siu mai this past weekend. However, the restaurant plans to reopen just a short walk north of its original location.

After nearly three decades of serving all-day dim sum in Toronto’s downtown Chinatown, Rol San served its last baskets of har gow and siu mai this past weekend at its original 323 Spadina Ave., location., it announced that Feb. 12 would be its last day of service after 28 years. However, it went on to say the restaurant will be staying in Chinatown, reopening at 388 Spadina Ave., a short walk north of the original location.

“It was our number one priority to stay in Chinatown, we never wanted to leave,” says Joyce Li, who co-owns the restuarant with her parents. “It’s our home. We made so many memories here and so many of our customers live in the area.” The dim sum restuarant is a mainstay for many Torontonians craving baskets of char siu bao and plates of rice noodle rolls throughout early mornings and late nights. “I think it’s mostly about the consistency with the food,” says Li on the restaurant’s enduring popularity. “We also retained the same esthetics and decor since opening. The morning and late night crowds have always been supportive to us.

Li says they have customers who’ve been coming to the restuarant since before she was born and watched her grow up, as well as former students from nearby universities that now bring their kids in. Li, who officially became part of the family buisness in 2019, says that construction has already started on the new location, which will merge two existing units to create a restaurant similar in size to the old location . The first half of the new Rol San, which takes over the downtown location of noodle chain Taste of Guang Xi, is slated to open in mid-March. The second half of the restuarant is planned for a summer opening.
