China is facing a demographic crisis as marriage rates decline and births fail to keep pace with the aging population.

Marriages in China declined by 20% last year, despite government initiatives aimed at encouraging young couples to wed and have children. This drop comes amidst a growing concern over China's declining population and its rapid aging. According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs, over 6.1 million couples registered for marriage in 2023, a significant decrease from the 7.68 million recorded in 2022.

This trend of declining interest in marriage and family formation has been attributed to several factors, including the high cost of childcare and education, coupled with sluggish economic growth, making it challenging for young graduates to secure stable employment. This economic insecurity further fuels their reluctance to commit to family life.Despite the challenges, Chinese authorities are actively seeking solutions to address the population crisis. Last year, they implemented measures such as encouraging universities to incorporate 'love education' into their curriculum, promoting positive attitudes towards marriage, love, fertility, and family. Additionally, the State Council urged local governments to allocate resources towards tackling the population issue and fostering respect for childbearing and marriages at an appropriate age. While there was a slight increase in births last year, possibly influenced by the Chinese zodiac year of the dragon, the country's population continued to decline for the third consecutive year
