In retaliation for the United States' recent increase in tariffs on Chinese goods, China has announced its own tariffs on a range of US imports, including coal, liquefied natural gas, crude oil, agricultural machinery, pickup trucks, and high-performance vehicles. The move escalates trade tensions between the two economic giants.

BEIJING, China - China announced on Tuesday that it would impose tariffs of 15 percent on imports of coal and liquefied natural gas from the United States . This action follows Washington's imposition of a 10 percent tariff on Chinese goods. Beijing's finance ministry also stated that it would levy a 10 percent tariff on US imports of crude oil, agricultural machinery, pickup trucks, and vehicles such as sports cars with large-displacement engines.

The new tariffs are a direct response to the 'unilateral tariff hike' by the United States over the weekend, according to Beijing. China asserts that this hike 'seriously violates World Trade Organization rules, does nothing to resolve its own problems, and disrupts normal economic and trade cooperation between China and the United States'. China's retaliatory tariffs will take effect next Monday, the finance ministry announced. On Saturday, the United States unveiled sweeping measures against major trade partners, with goods from China facing an additional 10 percent tariff on top of the existing duties. President Trump stated that these measures aim to punish countries for failing to curb the influx of illegal migrants and drugs, including fentanyl, into the United States. — Agence France-Press
