China claims foreign-funded NGOs' data could be used for spying
China has accused a foreign-funded environmental NGO of collecting oceanic data in sensitive waters, including in the East and South China seas, which could be used for spying.
However, it said the organisation, in the name of marine conservation, had regularly published research papers based on data collected by volunteers and through monitoring sites along the entire length of the Chinese coastline, covering the South and East China seas as well as the northern Yellow and Bohai seas.
On some occasions, the organisation allegedly encouraged volunteers to bypass fences and mudflats to carry out monitoring activities in one monitoring site near a naval port in Shanghai. When contacted by the Post on Tuesday, a Renduo Ocean staff member only said the organisation remained operational, without giving further details.
The new rules require such entities to take increased anti-espionage responsibilities, including extra vetting and training for all personnel with access to secrets.
