Chickoy Pura has been rocking with The Jerks since its formation in 1979. In fact, he’s the last original founding member of the country’s best bar band — which is celebrating its 45 anniversary with a gig on Dec. 19 at its de facto home base at My Bro’s Mustache on Scout Tuason, Quezon City.
It’s hard for me to know how long it will last. I guess I’ll leave it to fate. When you’re passionate about something, like playing music, you don’t count the years, just do your best, for as long as you can. Your guitar-playing skills have tremendously developed over the years. Were you somehow forced to adapt to play both rhythm and lead guitar when Nitoy left The Jerks? Would you agree The Jerks’ current lineup as a trio with Benjie Santos and Paolo Manuel can match the power and intensity of the band’s past incarnations? The band sounded very loud but still pleasing to the ears when it played a benefit gig with the Black Cows at 19 East.
