A similar service operates in Portland, Ore., and Denver, Colo.,and a pilot project has begun In Toronto.

The project by the Ottawa Guiding Council for Mental Health and Addictions aims to provide a non-police response for people who are in crisis and is expected to launch in the spring of 2024. The service will be available around the clock and will bring responses within minutes, Somerset Ward Coun. Ariel Troster said Tuesday.“I’m very pleased, but also extremely relieved that this is coming to Centretown,” Troster said.

A similar service operates in Portland, Ore., and Denver, Colo. In Toronto, a pilot project underway for the past year in four neighbourhoods is reporting what Troster described as good success.Article content The number to call for the pilot project hasn’t been finalized, but Troster said dispatchers, be they in the 911 call centre or with the new project, would help decide what response was appropriate. Troster called it a “no wrong door” approach. Police and paramedics will always be available as backup, if needed.
