This Australia Day, the Australian ambassador to the Philippines reflects on the strong bond between the two countries, highlighting their collaborative efforts in various fields such as security, defense, education, and scientific research.

January 26th is Australia Day , a day dedicated to celebrating modern Australia and acknowledging its history. For at least 65,000 years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have inhabited the vast southern continent we now call Australia. For millennia, First Nations Australians have been the traditional owners and custodians of a vibrant culture, the oldest continuous culture in the world, which continues to enrich our lives.

Today, Australia prides itself on being the most successful multicultural society on Earth. One in four Australians are migrants, like myself, and almost half of all Australians have a parent born overseas. This includes over 400,000 Filipinos who now call Australia home. In the Philippines, we commemorate Australia Day with our friends and partners. It is an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the immense collaborative work that forms the foundation of our Strategic Partnership. The friendship between Australia and the Philippines brings together people from all walks of life. Our police forces collaborate on combating transnational crime and protecting the most vulnerable in our societies. Our defense forces conduct joint training in air, land, and sea operations. Our students pursue education in each other's countries, including through Australia Awards Scholarships and the New Colombo Plan. Our scientists work together to enhance agricultural research for the benefit of Filipino farmers, fisherfolk, and to improve food security for the wider population. So, on this Australia Day, I invite you to join me in raising a toast to the true friendship between the Philippines and Australia; celebrating our achievements and looking forward to even greater accomplishments together
