The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) has significantly reduced crime rates and implemented a strict gun ban in preparation for the May 2025 elections.

The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) has made significant strides in maintaining peace and order within the city during the ongoing gun ban period. From January 12, 2025, the start of the election period, CCPO has conducted 657 checkpoints across Cebu City, resulting in the arrest of 24 individuals. Police Lieutenant Colonel Maria Theresa Macatangay, deputy city director for operations at the CCPO, revealed that a majority of the confiscated firearms were revolvers.

Macatangay emphasized that many of those apprehended were unaware of the nationwide gun ban, which suspends all permits to carry firearms outside of residences in preparation for the May 2025 local and national elections. The stringent implementation of the gun ban has coincided with a substantial decrease in crime rates compared to the same period last year. According to CCPO data, there have been only 47 recorded cases of index crimes, including murder, homicide, physical injury, rape, robbery, theft, carnapping, and cattle rustling, compared to 76 cases during the corresponding period in 2024. Macatangay attributed the improvement to increased police visibility in high-crime areas and the rapid response of law enforcement personnel to emergencies. Cebu City's crime clearance and solution efficiency rates have soared to 99.7 percent, signifying that nearly all reported crimes have been resolved. 'Our police force here in Cebu City is focused on addressing all types of crime, and compared to the statistics we've recorded this year, Cebu City is very peaceful,' stated Macatangay. While theft and physical injuries remain the most prevalent crimes, typical of large urban centers like Cebu City, the overall trend points towards a safer and more secure environment

Cebu City Government Pushes for Completion of Cebu City Medical CenterCebu City Government Pushes for Completion of Cebu City Medical CenterThe Cebu City Government is accelerating the completion of the unfinished Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC), particularly the interior portions of the final three to six floors. After a new contractor was awarded the project, Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia announced that the re-bidding process had reached the post-qualification stage. Although the winning bidder will be revealed next week, Garcia expressed his commitment to holding a groundbreaking ceremony at the end of February to demonstrate the city's seriousness in finishing the hospital. \\The mayor also plans to inaugurate each completed floor for public use. The project faced delays due to contract termination with the previous contractor in 2022. The city government has saved around P700 million from the terminated contract, which will be used to complete the remaining work. However, the City Council raised concerns regarding the re-bidding process due to incomplete plans and documents. Garcia urged the council to approve the tripartite agreement for the allocation of P205 million from private donors for the final three to six floors, currently managed by the Cebu Medical Society (CMS). Garcia requested the CMS to consider transferring the funds to the city government for efficient project management.
