Cayetano warns of 'reckoning' for those responsible for ABS-CBN franchise 'mess'
SPEAKER Alan Peter Cayetano breaks his silence on the closure of media giant ABS-CBN Corp. after a cease and desist order was issued by the National Telecommunications Commission and warned of “reckoning” for those responsible for the “mess”.
Cayetano said the government agency reneged on its promise in a House committee hearing on March 10 to grant ABS-CBN provisional authority to operate while waiting for lawmakers to act on the pending bills for franchise renewal that were filed in the House. “Despite their assurance given under oath. Despite the legal opinion of the Department of Justice. Despite a resolution from the Senate, and several verbal and written assurances given to Congress – the NTC appears to have succumbed to pressure from the Solicitor General, and issued a cease and desist order to ABS-CBN,” he said.
In the meantime, Cayetano vowed that Congress would conduct hearings on the ABS-CBN franchise but did not set a date yet.
