Opinion: The consequences of our system are election results that are grossly unrepresentative of a city’s population and views on civic issues.
For those who do vote, many simply rely on others to tell them who to vote for. Frequently, this comes in the form of a list of names curated sometimes well, sometimes not so well, by a special interest group. And then there are people like me who have been involved in city politics whose friends and neighbours ask for help.

Among the issues the citizens’ assembly could be tasked with examining are the use of proportional representation voting, lowering the voting age to 16, extending the vote to permanent residents, setting reasonable compensation levels for elected officials, and providing for the direct election of Metro council representatives.
The provincial government needs to step up as well. Reform is needed to the Metro Vancouver structure — for example, amalgamating some of the smaller municipalities and ending the direct election of Vancouver’s Park Board. Our current electoral system may work to a greater or lesser degree for some of B.C.’s smaller municipalities and regional districts. But the chaos of both this and the past election in our big cities makes it clear that the time for reform is past.
