Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle has lamented the trash that usually comes with church celebrations.
In his homily at the Sta Cruz Church in Manila, where he celebrated the Mass for the Feast of Corpus Christi, Sunday, Cardinal Tagle said it is really a wonder why there is much waste whenever there is a big feast in the church.
“We are celebrating a feast today and we will have a procession towards Manila Cathedral later. I hope there will be no litter,” added Tagle.“Sta Cruz Church is clean because somebody is being paid to clean the litter that people leave behind,” Tagle said. His Eminence appealed to the faithful to take care of the environment not only for the sake of the youth, but also because it’s God’s gift.
“In behalf of the youth, I appeal to all of you please take care of the environment. Give importance to this world we live in because this is a gift from God. A gift should not be destroyed,” said Tagle. During the “traslacion” of the Black Nazarene every January, the cardinal also reminded devotees to make the observance trash-free.
Still, the feast of the Black Nazarene is besmirched by tons of mixed garbage abandoned on the streets and sidewalks of the city of Manila, especially at Rizal Park and the roads and barangays where the procession passed.
