The older-model Toyota Camry was seen drifting off to the right of the Island Highway as it headed north near Bayview Park Road, before hitting a lamppost.
A car stolen from Victoria was found abandoned Tuesday night after it sheared off a lamppost and rolled down a 15-metre embankment just south of Nanoose Bay.
Nanaimo RCMP said the crash happened about 7:20 p.m. The older-model Toyota Camry was seen drifting off to the right of the Island Highway as it headed north near Bayview Park Road. “Witnesses ran down shortly thereafter and it was obvious there was nobody in the car,” said Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien. “Both airbags had deployed and the seat belts were extended so it looks like there was at least two people in the vehicle.”Police contacted the car’s owner, who said the vehicle had been reported stolen earlier in the day.jbell@timescolonist.com
