'Even in my own business, I enjoy it when people learn to do things. They might not know anything when they join my company, but when they leave, they already know a lot.'

'Even in my own business, I enjoy it when people learn to do things. They might not know anything when they join my company, but when they leave, they already know a lot.' EVEN as a young girl, Rossana Hwang knew she wanted to be a teacher.

Although neither of her parents were educators, she partly attributes her ambition to teaching children in Sunday School at her church. 'That was the closest thing to being a teacher that I became,' Hwang told The Manila Times. When her two children were growing up, she and the school invited parents to teach in class, and Hwang was always a willing volunteer. 'I did that a lot of times,' Hwang said. 'I taught Math for a day and that really made me happy. I love it when people learn.' 'Even in my own business, I enjoy it when people learn to do things. They might not know anything when they join my company, but when they leave, they already know a lot.' Hwang is a businesswoman involved in printing, food, fashion and art supply industries. She is also a baker known for her sans rival cakes, pies and pastries. Hwang earned an AB Economics degree cum laude from the Ateneo de Manila University. 'I never used the course that I finished,' Hwang said. 'It was just knowledge for me. Very basic college course.' In 2021, Hwang fearlessly ventured into film production. 'Even in my wildest dreams, I never thought I would make movies or become a barangay captain,' Hwang disclosed. She is always wary about scammers who might extract money from her. 'When somebody calls me and I don't know the person, I readily ask him or her why he/she is calling me up. If you are representing any company, I will be the one to call you up. I ask them, 'Why don't you work instead of doing these things?'' During the pandemic, Hwang was elected barangay captain of her village in Makati, where she served for three years. 'My parents were very much against me being a Kapitana in our barangay,' Hwang said. 'I never aspired to be a political person, nor did I come from a political family. I just wanted my thoughts to turn into a special thing. I love stories. I love watching movies. But never in my wildest dream did I imagine I would become a film producer.' Up to this day, Hwang could not tell what prompted her to produce films under her own outfit, Kapitana Media Entertainment. She initially started with 'The Women of Tonta Club,' a comedy shown online in 2021. The film, which was shown on an airline, caught the attention of a Scottish guy who expressed his desire to buy the rights. 'That shocked me,' Hwang shared. 'He went after me and expressed his desire to buy the movie.' Before Hwang ventured into film production, she was in the corporate world and helped her dad in their family business. Her father is now 96 years old, retired but still works whenever he can. 'We don't make him go out often because he has this heart ailment and is very fragile,' she said. 'My mom is turning 87.' Hwang apparently enjoyed being a film producer, which she was prompted to bankroll her sophomore outing, 'Isang Komedya sa Langit,' a comedy period flick staged in the Spanish colonial period in the year 1872. Aware of the present fate of local films, Hwang still bravely produced again. 'In China, movies are making a comeback,' she said. 'A lot of people are going back to the theaters in China. Their movies are even doing better than some of the films in America.' *** Quick questions What is your biggest fear? Ghost. What really makes you angry? I am always angry . What motivates you to work hard? Perfection. What makes you laugh the most? Funny moments. What would you do if you won the lotto? I'll give tithe to the church. If you could share a meal with any individual, living or dead, who would they be? I miss her all the time, Piling, the woman who took care of us when we were young. What was the last book you read? I forgot the title. A book by this Japanese writer which is not really significant. I just read it because I was doing a reference for the book I wrote, 'The Lost Saints.' Where do you see yourself in 10 years? In the year 2000, the Holy Jubilee, they told me the next time the Holy Door in the Vatican would be open again will be in 2025. So I told my friend, 'Let's go. I don't know if I will still be alive in 2025.' I'm already old. In 2010, I said I wanted to watch 'Oberammergau' in a town in Bavaria, Germany. It's like the reenaction of a passion play in the 1600s in the whole town, and it was done every 10 years to make the deaths stop. It was like a black plague in the Dark Ages. The plague ended. It was like their tourist attraction Oberammergau. So I went there. I told myself, if I can do it today, I'll do it now. Which celebrity would you like to meet for a cup of coffee? I met a lot of people already. I saw Donald Trump in Park Avenue, New York, when he still wasn't the president yet. I also saw Hollywood actor Kevin Costner. We rode the same elevator in New York and he was holding an apple. I saw Valerie Bertinelli at FAO Schwartz toy store also in New York. No cup of coffee, though. Purely sightings. What is the most daring thing you have ever done? Producing movies. What is the one thing you will never do again? I don't want to say that anymore . But it's not an activity, but more of getting into relationships.
