Khal Asfour has pulled out as the Labor candidate for the NSW upper house, with a spokesman citing the impact on his family of recent media coverage as the reason for his decision.

Embattled Canterbury-Bankstown mayor Khal Asfour has withdrawn as the Labor candidate for the NSW upper house, with a spokesman citing the impact on his family of recent media coverage as the reason for his decision.

A council statement on Friday said Asfour had been the victim of a vicious smear campaign that had taken a toll on his family and the Labor party.“The mayor is vehemently denying any wrongdoing and has at all times adhered to the policy set by council, a policy scrutinised by the Office of Local Government,” the statement said.

Fronting the inquiry in December, he said it was “no secret I got under the skin of this government when I stood up for my community and many other residents of western Sydney during the harsh lockdowns and overzealous policing during the COVID pandemic. I’ve had a political target on my back ever since”.“I know that once the mud is washed away, justice and my truth will prevail,” he said.

Mihailuk was subsequently booted from the NSW shadow cabinet by NSW Labor leader Chris Minns, before she announced this week that she had defected to One Nation to run for an upper house seat.

NSW Labor uses ‘misleading’ numbers on teacher vacancies within the workforceNSW Labor uses ‘misleading’ numbers on teacher vacancies within the workforceNew South Wales Education Minister Sarah Mitchell says Labor has put out “misleading” teacher workforce numbers in the state. “Some of the figures that have been put out by New South Wales Labor today are deliberately misleading,” Ms Mitchell told Sky News Australia. “What they fail to tell the people of New South Wales is that we actually have 10,000 more teachers in the system now than we had a decade ago. “They choose numbers at the end of the school year when vacancies are always high. “A vacant position doesn’t mean that a teacher isn’t in the role.”
