The Albanese government has approved the purchase of 40 US-made Black Hawk choppers to replace one of the military’s most troubled projects.

Australia will spend almost $3 billion buying 40 new US-made Black Hawk helicopters for the army, with Defence Minister Richard Marles officially killing off a troubled European project.

The aircraft fleet has been grounded on at least nine occasions, and sometimes out of service for three months.while the main gun was firing. Amid the Albanese government’s efforts to repair ties with Paris over the cancellation of the $90 billion submarine project, the French government made a last-ditch lobbying effort to Mr Marles to retain the Taipan. The French government is a part owner of Airbus.
