Directive comes as federal government is embroiled in questions about foreign interference by China in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections.
“As of February 28, the TikTok app will be automatically removed and blocked from use on all government-issued mobile devices. This decision was made by the Chief Information Officer of Canada to ensure the security and protection of government information systems and networks.
With the new directive, Canada is following the lead of the U.S. government, which enacted a similar ban late last year in light of growing concerns that TikTok owner ByteDance engages in “aggressive” data harvesting. But it also admitted last summer that American data could be accessed via a backdoor channel by employees in China and that it had already happened a number of times by then.
Because ByteDance is headquartered in China, it is subject to new sweeping laws that allow the Chinese Communist Part to compel any businesses in the country to share data with it if required.
