Inside the battle for the soul of Canadian soccer. The dispute with our national teams is rooted in whether Canada Soccer is about to squander the greatest generation of players this country has ever seen. Column by bruce_arthur
which opens its fifth season in April. Canada Soccer signed over the sponsorship and broadcast rights to its national teams in exchange for a flat rate of $3 million per year. The deal can be extended until 2037 at the sole discretion of CSB, which says it has been paying closer to $4 million. It was part of a plan put together by former Canada Soccer president Victor Montagliani, now president of CONCACAF and one of the most powerful soccer figures in the world.
CSB is indeed the biggest investment in soccer that Canada has ever seen. Whether it will be successful is unknown. The CPL has seen attendance declines in six of its eight markets, some sharp, between 2019 and 2022 and says it is still losing money. Whatever the origins of the deal, there is common ground here — or at least common interest. CSB doesn’t benefit if Canada’s national teams struggle. And across soccer, nobody objects to a domestic men’s league. It had been a goal for years, and was a prerequisite to co-hosting the 2026 World Cup. In theory, it should help the development of the game.CSB president Mark Noonan
And the deal has become a flashpoint because combined with the incompetence of Canada Soccer, it puts a ceiling on the amount of money generated by the national teams that actually goes back to the teams. If you sponsor Canada Soccer, what does it feel like when the budgets get slashed?
