TONGUES began wagging when the former president and speaker, now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, was shown posing in a picture with former vice president Maria Leonor Robredo, with Arroyo saying that they talked about Bicol politics. We all know that politics is about optics, and the image, and Arroyo's comment, could mean a lot of things. It would be easy to interpret the meetup as an early warning shot about possible political realignments now being hatched. Some would interpret it as a political opening for many opportunities and scenarios. Others can paint it as a stab in the back, a betrayal, or simply an act of treason by Arroyo.

Whatever it is, it is turning the heat, like the proverbial siling labuyo, on Camarines Sur politics. Unlike neighboring Albay where politics appears to be a pre-negotiated arrangement of taking turns to avoid costly and divisive matchups, politics in Camarines Sur is never boring. The province elected one of the first openly gay governors, Jose Bulaong, when gay rights was still not part of the public discourse. Political dynasties came, ruled and went.

Despite losing badly in the 2022 presidential elections to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., it is reasonable to assume that Robredo remains an influential figure in Camarines Sur politics. After all, she won in the province by a wide margin over Marcos. However, if Robredo decides to run for a local position, her viability as a winnable candidate may face challenges in the context of local political dynamics.
