House Deputy Majority Leader Janette Garin has called for the immediate collaboration between the Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture for the aggressive surveillance and information campaign about the deadly Nipah virus to prevent Filipinos from being infected.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , the Nipah virus can cause mild to severe disease, including swelling of the brain and potentially death. In 2014, there was one recorded case of the Henipah virus infection in the Philippines. It was detected in Sultan Kudarat. The nipah virus is a zoonotic virus transmitted from animals to humans and can also be transmitted through contaminated food or directly between people.
The virus can also cause severe disease in animals such as pigs, resulting in significant economic losses for farmers.
