Long-negotiated project gets $330-million injection from Danielle Smith’s Alberta government
Calgary resurrected plans to build a new arena adjacent to its downtown, striking a deal worth over $1.2-billion with the provincial government and the group that owns the Flames hockey club.
Calgary and CSEC have spent years haggling over a new facility, although the province has never been part of any deal to share the costs related to replacing the Scotiabank Saddledome. Calgary and CSEC resumed negotiations last October and, days after making that announcement, Ms. Smith released a letter that said she wanted to “identify potential ways” the province could “assist” in making a deal happen.
Ms. Smith wore a Flames jersey to Tuesday’s announcement, which took place in a parking lot next to the Saddledome, within sight of the BMO Centre, a convention facility that is in the midst of expansion on the Calgary Stampede grounds. The Flames missed the NHL playoffs this year.
