Cagayan Gov. Manuel Mamba is keeping his post after the Comelec reversed an earlier ruling of one of its divisions disqualifying him from the gubernatorial race for alleged unlawful election spending.
Citing the poll body’s records, the commission en banc considered the filing of the petition at 8 a.m. on May 11, 2022, already after the proclamation of Mamba, because Lara filed the complaint at 6:21 p.m. of May 10, 2022, which it said was already “beyond office hours” and when Mamba’s proclamation was “presumably about to happen.”
“It must be noted that petitioner had ample time of around two months from the conduct of alleged acts of vote-buying and unlawful disbursement of public funds,” the Comelec said. “As pointed out, it was [the] petitioner’s prerogative to file the petition at the last minute. It follows then that she faces the consequences arising therefrom,” it added.
Mamba, now serving his third and final term, thanked the Comelec and described the reversal a “significant win” for him and Cagayan. Mamba got 302,025 votes, while Lara received 278,562 votes in the May 9, 2022 elections. “Every Cagayano who voted for me know[s] that I did not buy a single vote during the elections. I have worked hard and nonstop to deliver on my commitment of good governance to the people of Cagayan,” said Mamba in a statement on Tuesday.Your subscription has been successful.
