The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) will utilize Mary Jane Veloso's expertise in Batik weaving to teach fellow persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW). This initiative is part of BuCor's intensified work and livelihood program for CIW inmates, which also includes activities like making beads, paper crafts, baking, painting, and solar panel assembly training. The DOJ, BuCor, and CIW have signed a memorandum of understanding with SPARK Philippines to improve the country's corrections system and empower women PDLs through Project ARTE, a nationwide technology upskilling and income generation program.
THE Bureau of Corrections said it would tap Mary Jane Veloso to teach her fellow persons deprived of liberty at the Correctional Institution for Women PDLs the techniques in weaving Batik, which she learned during her incarceration in Indonesia.
Catapang also disclosed that the Department of Justice , BuCor and CIW, signed a memorandum of understanding with the Samahan ng mga Pilipina para sa Reporma at Kaunlaran or SPARK Philippines to improve the country’s Corrections system while safeguarding and empowering women PDLs. Project ARTE is a flagship reformation and livelihood project for women PDLs under the leadership of DOJ Undersecretary Margarita N. Gutierrez, fully supported by DOJ and BuCor.
