ICYMI: BRUCE MACTAVISH: Like most of the island’s other migratory birds, hawks use southwestern Newfoundland as their launch pad | SaltWire

October is the golden month of colour and when migrating birds continue their annual long-distance flights southward.

In late August, the tawny-bodied northern harriers showing their juvenile age were a regular sight in coastal areas as they coursed low over the ground hoping to surprise voles or small birds. They will remain a regular sight until late October.BRUCE MACTAVISH: Wading into the stinky, rotting kelp to get eyes on Newfoundland and Labrador’s feasting shorebirds before they depart

But what about flying over long stretches of water? Some Avalon Peninsula nesting ospreys outfitted with satellite transmitters a few years ago clearly showed their route taken to leave the island of Newfoundland. Generally, they followed a route we humans would think logical. This was flying over as much land as possible before having to make the jump across the Cabot Strait to Nova Scotia.

This was the first time a large number of hawks had been witnessed leaving the island of Newfoundland. This is certainly only the tip of the iceberg of what goes on unseen with migrating hawks at the southwest corner of Newfoundland every fall. Arguably, the most exciting to see is the peregrine falcon because of their speed and manoeuvrability. About the size of a crow, they can out fly any other bird.

This bird originates from Central America, yet has a long history of visitations to Canada over the years, including Newfoundland and Labrador. Its occurrence always stirs up the excitement level in the birders.Less spectacular for looks and straying from only one province over, the marsh wren Vernon Buckle found and photographed at Forteau was an exciting first for Labrador.
